Vote on mouth-watering chilis, remember departed loved ones and help the Brittany Foundation’s rescue homeless dogs on Saturday, May 18.

The Brittany Foundation will hold its 7th annual Chili Cookoff and Memorial Event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Acton facility. You can enter your own chili in the contest by contacting the Brittany Foundation at brittany_dogs@yahoo.com.

Tasters will vote on the best chili. The winning cook will receive a beautiful and bountiful gift basked — and bragging rights.

The foundation is located at Sierra Highway and Anthony Road in Agua Dulce. Follow the signs to the sanctuary.

Sen. Scott Wilk honors the foundation with an award

At 1 p.m., Sen. Scott Wilk, who represents California’s 21st Senate District, will present the Brittany Foundation with his Distinguished Non-Profit Award. (The 21st District includes the Antelope Valley, Victor Valley and most of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Remembering loved ones at the Brittany Foundation Chili Cookoff

The last hour of the event will be devoted to honoring the memories of departed loved ones — human or animal.  For each donation of $10, the Brittany Foundation will inscribed your loved one’s name on the petal of a pinwheel. The colorful pinwheels will be planted in the foundation’s memorial garden in the front yard.

You can also have your departed one’s name put on a white painted rock as a memorial. A large memorial rock, suitable for two names, costs $50. A medium one, suitable for one name, costs $25. If you purchased a memorial rock last year, you can add a paw print, heart or bone to it for $10. You can purchase all of these memorial items online.

About the Brittany Foundation

The Brittany Foundation is a no-kill animal rescue and sanctuary in Acton. Its mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and shelter homeless abused and abandoned dogs. Since 1994, the foundation has placed an average of 100 dogs a year into new loving homes.

You can also help support the Brittany Foundation through their monthly bake sale at the Santa Monica Airport Antique Mart on the fourth Sunday of the month.

WoofTrax’s free smart phone application, Take Your Walk for a Dog, gives you a real two-fer — first, you and your dog get a healthy walk and, secondly, the miles you walk add up to donations for the animal shelter or rescue organization of your choice.

That sends 11- to 25-cents a mile to a particular rescue organization or shelter, depending on the number of people who sign up to support it. According to the WoofTrax’s website, 800,000 miles have been walked so far.  In their first six months, WoofTrax distributed $10,000 in donations to nearly 4,000 shelters.

Remembering Sam Simon

Uncounted dogs in Los Angeles owe their lives to the Sam Simon and the rescue foundation he created — including my Joey.

Mr. Simon, who earned “tens of millions” of dollars every year from his association with the longest running series in television history, “The Simpsons,” died Sunday of colon cancer.
