Quiche, with eggs, minced vegetables and slivered meat or fish, makes an excellent treat for dogs. This version gets rid of the wheat flour-based crust and uses oatmeal for a healthier twist.
This is intended as a treat to be doled out sparingly rather than a meal. For some dogs, the eggs and cheese may be too rich for some dogs. Start out with small portions until you see how your dog responds to it.
Quiche for Real Dogs
(Created by Eddy Robey)
Ingredients:
- 2 cups oatmeal (regular, not instant)
- 4 to 6 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 to 2 cups grated cheese
- 1 to 2 cups finely minced vegetables, meat or fish (or a combination of all of them)
Preheat the oven to 325°F. Grease and lightly flour the inside of a 2-quart dish.
Cook the oatmeal in either broth or lactose-free milk to yield 2 cups. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.
Beat the eggs with the baking powder. Mix in the oatmeal thoroughly. Add the cheese, minced vegetables, meat, fish or combination of them all. (If using canned fish, mash it well with a fork before mixing it into the eggs, oatmeal and vegetables.)
Pour the mixture into your prepared 2-quart dish and bake for about an hour. The quiche will be done when it has risen evenly all over, including the center.
Let the quiche cool for about 15 minutes before cutting. This will yield a quiche-like treat without a pastry crust. It will keep in the refrigerator about a week.
By changing the vegetables, meats and fish you add, you can add variety to your dog’s diet. Don’t overlook adding vegetables such as minced parsley or kale. Add carrots if they are a favorite of your dog’s. (Fido likes broccoli.)
Remember that some foods are toxic to dogs and should never be included in foods that you give your dog. These include:
- Onions or garlic.
- Avocado.
- Grapes or raisins.
- Macadamia nuts.
- Any food that is moldy.
