Registration is now open for the Best Friend’s Animal Society’s annual fundraising dog walk, 5K run and festival — Strut Your Mutt.

You can join a team or register individually to help the Best Friends Animal Society and its partners raise $425,000 for life-saving services for homeless dogs and cats. Last year, more than 1,000 people raised more than $400,000 for programs such as spaying and neutering, adoption events and more.

The Oct. 20 event at Exposition Park, 700 Exposition Park Dr., will open with a celebratory dog walk. There will be a family-friendly festival with food trucks, vendors and lots of fun activities.

Online, you can find helpful fundraising tips and tricks, get answers to questions or download an offline donation form.

WoofTrax’s free smart phone application, Take Your Walk for a Dog, gives you a real two-fer — first, you and your dog get a healthy walk and, secondly, the miles you walk add up to donations for the animal shelter or rescue organization of your choice.

That sends 11- to 25-cents a mile to a particular rescue organization or shelter, depending on the number of people who sign up to support it. According to the WoofTrax’s website, 800,000 miles have been walked so far.  In their first six months, WoofTrax distributed $10,000 in donations to nearly 4,000 shelters.

Remembering Sam Simon

Uncounted dogs in Los Angeles owe their lives to the Sam Simon and the rescue foundation he created — including my Joey.

Mr. Simon, who earned “tens of millions” of dollars every year from his association with the longest running series in television history, “The Simpsons,” died Sunday of colon cancer.
